Red Snapper Fishing Guide

Panama City Beach sits on some of the best red snapper water in the Gulf. Here's how the season works and what to expect on a snapper trip.

Red snapper are the fish many visitors come to Panama City Beach for. They're strong, they're beautiful and they're some of the best-eating fish in the Gulf. The reefs and wrecks off Bay County hold plenty of them, and a good snapper day can fill the cooler fast.

Red snapper are carefully managed, so you can only keep them during set seasons. Dates and limits are announced each year, and they're different for charter boats and private boats. Your captain will know exactly what's open on the day you fish.

What a snapper trip includes

  • Bottom fishing on reefs and wrecks
  • Heavy rods and reels made for pulling fish off structure
  • Cut bait and live bait when it's available
  • A mate to help rig, bait and unhook
  • Release tools to send short fish back safely
  • Other reef fish like triggerfish and vermilion snapper
  • Ice for the ride back to the dock
  • A captain who keeps up with the current rules

How snapper are caught

Find the structure

The captain uses GPS numbers and sonar to set up right over a reef or wreck.

Drop to the bottom

Baited rigs go straight down. You'll feel the weight hit bottom, then reel up a few turns.

Set the hook and lift

Snapper bite hard and dive for the reef, so you reel fast to pull them away from the structure.

Keep or release

The mate measures each fish. Short or out-of-season fish go back down with a release tool so they survive.

When red snapper are open

Charter boats with federal permits fish a for-hire red snapper season that is set each year, usually centered on the summer months. In recent years it has run from June into the fall. Private boats in Florida follow a separate state season.

Even outside red snapper season, the same reefs hold triggerfish, vermilion snapper, mangrove snapper, grouper and amberjack when they're open. A good captain will plan the trip around what you can keep.

Questions to ask your charter captain

  • Is red snapper open on the dates I want to fish?
  • What other fish can we keep if snapper is closed?
  • How many fish can each person keep?
  • Do you use release tools for fish we can't keep?

Common questions

When is red snapper season in Panama City Beach?

It changes every year. Federal for-hire charters usually fish a summer season, and Florida sets a separate season for private boats. Check with your captain or Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) for the current dates.

How far offshore are the red snapper?

Snapper live on reefs and wrecks from fairly close to shore out to deep water. Bigger fish are often farther out, so longer trips usually mean bigger snapper.

Can I take my snapper home?

Yes. Fish are usually cleaned at the marina, often by a fish market for a fee. Bring a cooler with ice for the drive back to where you're staying.

Can a restaurant cook my catch?

Several Panama City Beach restaurants will cook fish you caught. Ask your captain which ones they recommend.
