Planning Your First Fishing Charter
Never been on a fishing charter? Here's how to choose a trip, what to bring and how to make the most of your day on the water.
A trip with one of the PCB Florida charters is one of the best things to do in Panama City Beach, even if you've never held a rod. The captain finds the fish, the mate handles the bait and the gear, and you get to reel them in.
The most important choices are the type of trip and how long you'll be out. A short trip is a great way to start, especially with kids. A longer trip gets you farther offshore and gives you a shot at bigger fish.
What to bring
- Sunscreen, a hat and polarized sunglasses
- Soft-soled, closed-toe shoes
- A light jacket for early mornings
- Food and drinks (ask what's allowed on board)
- Seasickness medicine, taken before you leave
- A cooler with ice for your fish
- A phone or camera for photos
- Cash to tip the mate
How to book a charter
Choose private or shared
A private charter is just your group. A shared trip puts you on a boat with other anglers and costs less per person.
Pick a trip length
Four hours is great for kids and first-timers. Six to ten hours goes farther offshore for bigger fish.
Ask the right questions
Find out what's included, what you can keep and what happens if weather cancels the trip.
Show up early
Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before departure so the boat leaves on time.
Avoiding seasickness
Seasickness is the most common worry for first-timers. Take seasickness medicine the night before and again the morning of the trip, as the label directs. Get a good night's sleep and eat a light breakfast.
On the boat, stay in fresh air, keep your eyes on the horizon and stay out of the cabin. If you're very worried, start with a shorter trip or an inshore trip in the calm bay.
Questions to ask your charter captain
- What's included in the price?
- Is this trip private or shared?
- Can we bring food and drinks on board?
- What is your cancellation and weather policy?
Common questions
Do I need fishing experience?
No. The crew will show you everything, from baiting the hook to reeling in the fish.
Should I tip the mate?
Yes, it's customary. Many people tip the mate 15 to 20 percent of the trip price, more for great service. Mates work hard and tips are a big part of their pay.
Do I need a fishing license?
Not on a licensed charter boat. The boat's license covers everyone fishing on board.
How many people can go on a charter?
It depends on the boat. Many six-passenger boats are common, and larger boats can take bigger groups. Ask when you book.
Know a charter captain doing great work?
We're always looking for local fishing charters to celebrate. Captains can reach out to be featured, too.
