Panama City Beach Fishing Seasons

Every season brings different fish to Panama City Beach. Here's what's biting through the year and how to plan your trip around it.

You can fish Panama City Beach all year, but the fish change with the seasons. Water temperature, migrations and fishing seasons set by the state and federal government all decide what you can catch and keep.

If you're planning a trip around a certain fish, check with your captain before you book. They'll tell you what's been biting and what's open.

What's biting, season by season

  • Spring: cobia running along the beaches
  • Spring: king and Spanish mackerel arriving
  • Summer: red snapper and other reef fish
  • Summer: sharks close to shore
  • Summer: mahi and other fish offshore
  • Fall: king mackerel and bull redfish
  • Fall: amberjack and grouper when open
  • Winter: sheepshead, trout and bottom fish

How to plan around the seasons

Pick your target

Decide if you want a certain fish, or just a fun day catching whatever's biting.

Ask what's open

Many reef fish have set seasons. Your captain knows what you can keep on your dates.

Book early for summer

Summer and holiday weekends fill up fast, especially during red snapper season.

Leave room for weather

If you can, plan your trip early in your vacation so there's time to reschedule.

The busy season and the quiet season

Spring is famous for cobia, which migrate along the beaches each year, often from March into April. Summer is the busiest season, with red snapper open for charter boats, sharks close to shore and calm mornings on the Gulf.

Fall brings fewer crowds, cooler weather and strong fishing for king mackerel, bull redfish and other species. Winter trips depend on the weather, but calm days can be excellent for bottom fishing and inshore sheepshead and trout.

Questions to ask your charter captain

  • What's been biting the past few weeks?
  • What species can we keep on my dates?
  • How far ahead should I book?
  • What happens if the weather is bad on my date?

Common questions

What's the best month to fish in Panama City Beach?

It depends on what you want to catch. June and July are popular for red snapper, April is known for cobia, and October is great for kings and redfish with fewer crowds.

Can I fish in winter?

Yes. Many captains fish year-round, though winter trips depend on calm weather. Inshore fishing is a good winter option.

Why can't I keep some fish?

Many species have seasons, size limits and bag limits to protect the population. Your captain will tell you what's legal to keep.

How far ahead should I book a summer charter?

Book as early as you can. Popular dates in June and July can fill weeks or months ahead.
